Creating a tech career with Purdue’s Indy Scholars program

Career consulting resources and a network of ambitious Boilermakers have added to Amal Fareed’s college experience.

Have you heard about all of the opportunities students can find in Indianapolis? One of the many benefits is the Indy Scholars program. Indy Scholars are awarded a minimum of $10,000 and gain access to the Purdue Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation as well as detailed career consulting. Recipients optimize their college experience by making the most of their time in school while preparing for their next steps. Learn how Amal Fareed is succeeding on her path.

Q: Why Purdue in Indianapolis?
A: I was drawn to the ability to gain hands-on experience through internships, connect with industry professionals and especially wanted to be part of a growing campus community.

Q: What are you studying?
A: I am studying computer and information technology, and I hope to build a career that connects technology, leadership and community impact.

Q: How has the Indy Scholars program impacted your experience?
A: It has allowed me to focus more on my academics, professional development and involvement on campus.

Q: What sets Indy Scholars career consulting apart?
A: Instead of simply having a general idea of what I wanted to do, I now have a clearer road map for gaining experience, exploring career paths and preparing for a future in the technology field.

Q: What’s an unexpected benefit from Indy Scholars?
A: One opportunity I didn’t expect was how quickly I would be able to build meaningful connections with people who helped me discover opportunities that I may not have found on my own — from leadership experiences to professional development opportunities — that have shaped my first year at Purdue.

Q: What advice would you give incoming students?
A: I would tell incoming students that Indianapolis offers the best of both worlds: a Purdue education and access to a city full of opportunities. Attend events, introduce yourself to people and get involved, even if you’re unsure where it might lead.
